It seems like once a year, I make one big trip to all the bookstores in town.
In addition to looking for new and interesting things to read myself, I’m also stocking up on books and other fun things that you can find in bookstores to give as gifts.
One item that I found to be a “fun read” is the book 101 Things To Do Before You’re Old And Boring by Richard Horne and Helen Szirtes.
Following are a few of the things they say you just have to try before you’re old and gray — my personal favorites.
What makes this book unique is the fact that there are checklists included and ways for you to personalize and document the steps you go through to make each one of the 101 things happen.
Now that’s my kind of book! It’s super practical.
My Favorites… 15 FUN Things To Do Before You Die
From the book 101 Things To Do Before You’re Old And Boring (with my own examples in the links):
#1 – Send a message in a bottle. Someone might actually find it. Honestly, it could happen.
#2 – Prepare yourself for fame. There’s no time like the present… you never know! (This might help.)
#3 – Paint a picture good enough to hang on the wall. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Think of it as a conversation piece!
#4 – Win something. I did it, and so can you. But that means you’ve got to enter things.
#5 – Start a collection. Anything… even if it’s only meaningful to you. Then, display it proudly, and add to it regularly.
#6 – Help save the planet. The point is to live your life with purpose!
#7 – Start your own blog. There’s no better way to share your thoughts and ideas with people all across the world. Market yourself… or your ideas known to others.
#8 – Do something charitable every year. Or, if you have the right mindset, you could strive to make someone else’s life better every day! Think small.
#9 – Invent a new trend. Start something fun and watch it catch on. But you have to be proud of your trendy new idea or style, no matter how unusual it may seem at first.
#10 – Learn to live without something you love for a week — a whole week.
#11 – Make your own greeting cards. No Hallmark card can reflect you, your style, and your heartfelt words as well as you can.
#12 – Have a yard sale… and make it count. If you’re really serious about it, you can make a lot of money and have fun at the same time!
#13 – Write a story and get it published — even if it is in the form of a blog or in a scrapbook.
#14 – Learn to take great photos. There’s not much to “learn” here in my opinion, because quantity is better than quality. Just get out there and do it! Pictures capture moments in time that can never be replaced.
#15 – Decide what you want to be when you grow up. Sounds like the makings of a New Year’s Resolution to me!
There are 86 additional ideas in the book 101 Things To Do Before You’re Old And Boring. It’s a fun read… I promise.

The four seasons and major holidays are my favorite times of the year to recharge — and redecorate. I mostly like to share frugal DIY ideas for seasonal home decorating and party planning (for both, indoors and outside). Because who doesn’t enjoy entertaining at home?!
But even if you don’t host many parties, I think you’ll appreciate my DIY hacks and clever ways to decorate your house for the major holidays including Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas. Because those are the times when people tend to have the most visitors and overnight houseguests.
